In addition, they can develop and improve their chess ability through real tournament experience and training sessions with experienced coaches in between rounds.

This event is the final event in the 2019 / 2020 Elite Junior Chess 2019 Grand Prix Series, with cash prizes, organised by Grandmaster Nick Pert.

Eton College

The Tournament

The tournament will be played in five sections:
  • ECF graded open U18 section for experienced juniors up to the age of 18, with no maximum grade (ECF graded)
  • ECF graded U11 Delancey Megafinal qualifying section for those under 11 on 31st August 2019 (year 6 and below) (ECF graded)
  • ECF graded U9 Delancey Megafinal qualifying section for those under 9 on 31st August 2019 (year 4 and below) (ECF graded)
  • Improvers' section for those under 18 on 31st August 2019 and under 80 ECF grade (ungraded)
  • Older beginners' section for those under 12 on 31st August 2019 (year 7 and below), who have no ECF grade and playing in their first few tournaments (ungraded)
  • Younger beginners' section for those under 8 on 31st August 2019 (year 3 and below), who have no ECF grade and playing in their first few tournaments (ungraded)
  • Please note that if numbers in sections are too low, sections may be merged. All qualifying Delancey sections will remain valid for Delancey Schools Chess Challenge Megafinal qualification.
For the ECF graded sections, entrants must be registered with the ECF as a silver, gold or platinum member (first year's silver membership is free for juniors) to avoid a £5 grading fee. The graded sections are open to children of all abilities, but typically children playing in this section will already have experience of playing in a number of chess tournaments.

The Beginners' and Improvers' sections are not ECF graded and are designed for less experienced juniors, who may have only played in one or two tournaments, or even none at all, to gain experience among other children of a similar level.

All sections are rapidplay, with 25 minutes on the clock with no increment.

Megafinal Qualification

The Training

The qualification score in each Delancey qualifying age group is:

  • 3½ and above out of 6, or;

  • Top 3 boys and girls in each age group.

Training will be provided in a separate training room by an experienced chess coach from half past each hour until 5 minutes before the start of the round. The format is fun, interactive and will be at a level suitable for the children in attendance.

It's not compulsory to attend the training, but this is a fantastic opportunity for your child to get immersed in chess for the day - lots of parents report great improvements in their children's playing ability after these sessions and they're great fun too!

Terms & Conditions

Elite Junior Chess 2019/2020 Grand Prix Series

The Elite Junior Chess 2019/2020 Grand Prix Series, is a series of four events organised by GM Nick Pert that are likely to take place in 2019 and early 2020. All players taking part in three or more events are eligible. Each player's top three scores from the series of three events will make up their Grand Prix score. The top seven scorers from the series will win a cash prize as follows:

1st - £100
2nd - £50
3rd - £30
4th - £20
5th -£15
6th -£10
7th - £5

Only one beginners or improvers' section score may be used towards the Grand Prix score. If two players have the same top score, the 4th event score will be used as a tie-break. In the event that only one player has a 4th event score, that player will be deemed the winner. In the event that the 4th score is also tied, 1st and 2nd place prizes will be combined and split equally. If there are more than two players in joint first position for the Grand Prix prize after tie-break has been applied, all prizes will be combined and split equally. Find out more about the Grand Prix series here.
