  • ECF graded U11 section for those under 11 on 31st August 2018 (year 6 and below) (ECF graded)
  • Improvers' section for those under 18 on 31st August 2018 and under 80 ECF grade (ungraded)
  • Beginners' section for those under 9 on 31st August 2018 (year 4 and below), who have no ECF grade and playing in their first few tournaments (ungraded)

For the ECF graded sections, entrants must be registered with the ECF as a silver, gold or platinum member (first year's silver membership is free for juniors) to avoid a £5 grading fee. The graded sections are open to children of all abilities, but typically children playing in this section will already have experience of playing in a number of chess tournaments.

The Improvers' section is not ECF graded and is designed for less experienced juniors, who may have only played in one or two tournaments, or even none at all, to gain experience among other children of a similar level.

All sections are rapidplay, with 25 minutes on the clock with no increment.

Terms & Conditions

Elite Junior Chess 2019 Grand Prix Series
The Elite Junior Chess 2019 Grand Prix Series, is a series of four events organised by GM Nick Pert that are likely to take place in 2019. All players taking part in three or more events are eligible. Each player's top three scores from the series of three events will make up their Grand Prix score. The top seven scorers from the series will win a cash prize as follows:

1st - £100
2nd - £50
3rd - £30
4th - £20
5th -£15
6th -£10
7th - £5

Only one improvers' section score may be used towards the Grand Prix score. If two players have the same top score, the 4th event score will be used as a tie-break. In the event that only one player has a 4th event score, that player will be deemed the winner. In the event that the 4th score is also tied, 1st and 2nd place prizes will be combined and split equally. If there are more than two players in joint first position for the Grand Prix prize after tie-break has been applied, all prizes will be combined and split equally. Find out more about the Grand Prix series here.
